Cannot quit mail to restart and download app updates

I just got a mac book pro (new to mac). I get a notification to update the OS software through the apps--it tells me I need to restart the computer. I click restart and thentells me "mail" is bocking the restart and I need to quit mail. I try to quit mail and am unable to -- computer also wont shutdown until mail is quit
