I've always been able to copy chinese characters from pdfs and other documents and paste them into word or powerpoint or wenlin etc. Suddenly the characters do not copy and paste. I get little boxes or other dingbats. I tried changing the font etc. but nothing works. Is this due to an update on the OS? How do I solve it?

PDF format is very different from most other docs, in that you cannot rely on copy/paste for non-Latin scripts. Try Adobe Reader instead of Preview (or Vice Versa) or try different pdfs. Send me an example of one that does not work if you like (tom at bluesky dot org).
What other format doc is not working for chinese copy/paste for you?

The thing is that I was able to copy and paste in preview with this very pdf before the upgrade. I tried your suggestion anyway and it did not work in adobe reader and still no go. Why did it Stop working suddenly? I've been doing this through preview for years.
Sorry, I meant that I am in OS 10.8.2. This happened after updating the latest upgrade. ARgh!! I use copy and paste all the time and now I can't!!
also, I can copy and paste from this pdf on my laptop still - I did not upgrade on this...
I seem to be able to copy/paste from a chinese pdf ok into textedit (don't use word). Do you also get garbage with TextEdit? Could you send me an example pdf which does not work?
