extending wireless network (virgin)

I have a virgin home hub (fiarly new). I have a TC - bought to replace router we had proir to integrated hub. I use TC as timemachine, and its connected into network - bridge mode using ethernet cable. Our cable for modem etc is in back bedroom so network weak in front downstairs. want to exptend network/ wifi, through getting second hand airport but would like to know in advance how to set up. Currently have :

Do I need to somehow turn off the router part in my virgin hub and make the TC a router first? Or is their a way for a airport to connect into system as I have it?

I cannot select what I want from the above.. but you have this setup wrongly..

You have both an ethernet connection and a join wireless connection. That messes things up.

Ethernet is good.. keep that. Change over the wireless from join to create a wireless network. You can give it a different name or the same name.. then check the allow it to be extended and the airport can then extend the TC network..

Although a better way would be to use a longer ethernet and place the TC in the poor wireless area. The connection will still be fine over ethernet.

...I thought I had it wrong too - but these settings seem to be the only way it will work at all. Tried another setting and my mac could not find tc at all. From what you've said, would tc be creating a second network? Would I connect mac upstairs to this new network or the virgin one? I'm getting more confused now! It was better before the hub!

Go back to scratch.. and always setup by ethernet.. do not ever attempt to setup wireless by wireless.. you are cutting off the branch you are sitting on.

Disconnect the TC from the existing networking.. plug it into a computer by ethernet.. press and hold the reset and start again.

Set the TC in bridge mode.. very important.

Set the wireless to create.. and give it the name you want.. you can do whatever you like.. use the same name as the virgin hub or a different name.. you are not creating a secondary network.. you are creating a second wireless network.. both are linked via the HUB and you have full access to clients on either .. so it makes not a wit of difference. For roaming though.. use exactly the same name.. same security.. same passkey.. different wireless channel.

Update the TC and plug it back into the network.

You now have TC or virgin hub and can use either.

Well tried that - now no TC at all - mac cannot find it, tried reset, power on off, reset mac, nothing . Noise from tc, ligh on re set which goes out. Nothing at leat I had something before. I sacan and scan but it cant be found. HELP!

... the minuite i diconnected it I lost it. Cannot get it back. Find it hard to beleive it happened to break at the exct moment i tried this. Would put back on my "wrong" settings that at least allowed me to use as time machine only thats not working now either.

If the TC light goes out the power supply is dead.. this is the most common form of failure on gen1 and gen2 TC..

Gen 3 tends to fail completely with a different problem.

The two things are unrelated.. setting up a TC and failure of the power supply are not connected. A factory reset will prove that.. Leave the TC off until cooled down completely.. before you attempt the restart.. that can help.
