Even though you did not answer my question, thank you for taking the time to reply. You did not tell me if there was a way to SWITCH from ATT to Verizon. If I could afford to buy a new phone that works on Verizon's network I would. My current Verizon phone is 8 years old. It still works. My brother gave me his 3G S so that I could have more capabilities than my "dumb phone". He thought it would be nice if I could enter the smart phone era. At least he is thoughtful and compassionate rather than terse.
Thank you for your consise answer roaminggnome. After I posted my question, I was led to similar questions posted by others. Your answers to those were consistent and thorough.
The bottom line is that the 3GS does NOT have a CDMA radio which is needed to work on Verizon's network. It would be like trying to get an FM station on an AM radio. It can't happen. That's why you would need an entirely new phone.
Verizon has a CDMA network. AT&T has a GSM network. The two are totally incompatible. There is no way ANY GSM phone can work on a CDMA network. Further, Apple never made a 3GS that would work on a CDMA network. The iPhone 4 was the first.
