I forgot my password on my mac air

I am trying to download software,

What password do you need to download software? Is this about your Apple ID for a Mac App Store Account, or your Admin password for your computer?

If it is the latter, you can reset your Admin password, via these instructions.

Restart into recovery mode and select Reset Password from Utilities menu.
