Can't log into messages (log entries inside) - the other solutions didn't work

Hi,

That set of messages seems to be telling your everything that could be "wrong" is wrong with the attempt to register the Apple ID.

It tells you the account name is empty, it tells you the password info is empty (but not at the same time).

It looks like the password is linked to an email (Apple ID ?) despite the fact it already told you it didn't know the Apple ID (iMessages name).

It is supposed to get an Authorization Token (From Apple) for the fact the iMessage Apple ID has been "Registered" but also tells you this is at fault (empty probably mean not received in this case)

As you had to migrate/import the User Account it make me wonder if you have permission to Write to certain Folders ?

In the Finder go to the View Menu.

With a Finder window open chose the Show Path bar.

Now use the Go Menu > Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/Preferences

Right Click the Library item in the Path Bar and chose Get Info.

DO you have permissions to Write to the Library ? (Your should also Own it)

You should now also be able to navigate to ~/Library/Keychains.

Do you own the Login Keychain ?

Can your Write to the Keychain ?

I'm having the same issue, in that I can't login to iMessages on my recently re-installed mountain lion, I thought it was the same DNS error as I've found searching the discussions groups, but I successfully went into my system > prefrences > mail calendar contacts prefs and unselected iCloud and was able to re-login.

I even went through the exercise of messing with the hosts file, I shut down my firewall and all but to no avail.

I don't know what it means that I can login on my work mac to imessages but I cannot at home? and I have iCloud setup at home and my email is all setup just fine, (back to my mac, find my mac etc)

I still get the error that I canot login to iMessages due to a network error, How did you get the logs for iMessages?

Is there any chance this particular Mac has been refurbished or repaired ?

If so in the System Information is the Serial Number listed in the Hardware item ?

I am having this same exact problem, getting this in the event log:

yes, this macbook pro was previously sent in for repair a few years ago when the video went out on it, I was able to vnc into it, but was not able to get video to the display nor the dvi output. so no there is no sn listed in system information, it simply reads: System Serial#.

A few weeks ago I decided that I was going to re-install osx mountain lion because my machine kept locking up. I created a new account and found that it only locked up under my account, intermittently, but annoying enough. I made a timemachine backup, I installed a clean OSX 10.8 install as admin I performed all the updates to 10.8.2 and then restored my user account from my timemachine backup. afterwards I performed a validate permissions in disk utility and everything is good.

I logged into my account and proceeded to setup icloud, no errors (photostream etc). that all works, but when I went to login to imessages I was caught with this error. Before I did a clean install I didn't have trouble with iMessages on my mac.

found my event logs, I have iMessages open, I cleared the window then with my uid and pwd already set I click the signin button and I get these messages:

Hi,

My understanding is that any reputable Apple Repair center has the tools to "replace" the Serial Number.

Some Apps use this info to confirm the security checks it makes when "registering".

I was refered to this repair center by the Apple Genius, Like I said, iMessages was working before I did a clean install of OSX 10.8.2

Hi,

First try going to the Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) and finding imagent (lower case) and Quitting it.

Relaunch Messages afterwards.

I was just able to fix my problem (Empty auth token supplied for account) by deleting the iMessage Signing Key and the iMessage Encryption Key from keychain access and restarting my computer. I assume the same would work for the OP

I am not sure why it worked and now does not.

Possibly the OS X 10.8.2 update introduces more checks or confirmations that you are in fact you. (or that the computer is valid)

It does make some sense that Apple check that app is on a valid computer.

Update, after a day of my issue fixed it came back... this time I reset my NVRAM per the instructions here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 and my issue is finally fixed 100%... I also noticed my facetime app was not working as well, resetting the NVRAM fixed this also.

As it turns out I worked with Apple Care whom ended up refering me to go into the apple store and have them take a look at my macbook pro which in fact did not have it's SN# on it's motherboard. At the Apple store, the genius there connected up my mac and burned in my SN# back to the mainboard and after a reboot I was finally able to login into iMessages.

so if the system is broken for those out there...

1) check that your machine's sn is still reported in About this mac.
