iPod classic meltdown

My iPod classic a few days ago stopped working and the screen said to restore. I did that but it still won't turn on. Fully charged and I've tried the Support section here but the iPod won't recognize the commands to get to disk mode. Instead it makes some scraping sounds or like static on a radio. It is no longer recognized by iTunes. Is there anything that can be done at home? Is there anything I can do at the store? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive. I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread. He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.
