While updating web page in iweb last week it suddenly has stopped working and now crashes every time I try to open it. I don't remember exactly what I was doing at the time. When I try to open it the inspector box opens first and then the status bar comes up and shows it's trying to open but as the bar reaches the end it dissappears and the error message box comes up asking me to 'ignore', 'report', or 'relaunch'. Any ideas??

Post the first 50 lines of the crash report and the lines for the thread that crashed.
In the meantime you can try this basic troubleshooting fix:
1 - delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - go to your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
3 - launch iWeb and try again.

That did help - I am able to open it and do some work however when I try to open one particular page - a new one I added before all this problem it's still crashing - so I am unable to change or even delete that specific page and start over.
