I believe Apple Store cards can only be used in the Apple Store which is not the same as the iTunes Store.

    "Gift Cards

Apple Store Gift Cards are issued and managed by Apple Value Services, LLC and can be applied only to purchases from an Apple Retail Store, the Apple Online Store, or the Apple Contact Center in the U.S. Gift Cards may not be redeemed at the iTunes Store, at any Apple resellers, for cash (except as required by law), or for shipments outside the U.S." - Apple Store (US) Sales and Refund Policy - http://store.apple.com/us/open/salespolicies

Basically what you bought was for hardware and the like from the Apple Store.  You should have bought an iTunes card.

Mac App Store: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4461

"Can I use an iTunes Gift Card or Apple Store Gift Card to make purchases on the Mac App Store?

iTunes Gift Cards can be used to make purchases from the Mac App Store. Apple Store Gift Cards are redeemable in Apple retail stores, and may not be used on the Mac App Store."

I have no idea about being able to return a card.  Most Apple sales are final but you can get a more definitive answer if you contact Apple.

I have to agree that Apple, while great at thinking up new gadgets, stinks at thinking up new names.  The iPad2 was preceeded by and followed by the "iPad".  There's been umpteen generations of iMacs, all called iMac.  People here confuse MacBook with MacBook Pros, and MacBook Pros with Mac Pros.

My personal theory is Apple's concept is you should, of course, be rushing out and buying the newest gadgets the day they appear and never own anything except the newest.  In that case MacBook always means the newest.

In your case, it doesn't help that there's apps that run on mobile devices and are sold by the iTunes Store, and Apps that run on computers and are sold by the App Store, which is easily muddled with the Apple Store.   When I'm elected emperor I will decree that apps run on mobile devices and everybody will be obliged under dire punishment to type the full word application for what they run on a computer.
