iTunes won't add or import new files

I am running mountain lion 10.8.2 and my system is fully updated.I have my itunes library on an external drive but I am unable to add new files to iTunes. I have tried dragging and dropping and the plus appears and when I release the files I get the color wheel for several seconds but it does not get added. The same happens when I try going through the menu and cmd+O. I can download new items from iTunes but nothing can be imported. I am at my wits end and can't figure out what is going on.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

How are you determining this? Check your Recently Added playlist. Are they there? If they are, are you using iTunes Match? I see daily issues where match can cause a delay in items appearing in the main library, sometimes by several hours.

I am using match and it is not the issue, I have tried turning it off and it's the same thing. I did get music files to add earlier today but I still can't get movies to import. I don't know what is preventing it.

A person who had a similar issue yesterday said nothing was working for them either, then posted back this morning saying everything appeared overnight.

I'm having the same problem. It does seem to come and go, but at the moment I can't add any media files to iTunes running under Mountain Lion. Drag and drop, or the menu choice "Add to Library", nothing works. No error messages, just no added files.

It's extremely frustrating, to say the least. It makes iTunes unusable. On a Windows platform, I could uninstall and then re-install iTunes, which sometimes fixes problems. But I can't do that on the Mac.

Update: this appears to be the solution, though not for the faint-hearted. The problem was a bad iTunes Library.itl file.

This solution worked for me, but my Time Machine let me down and I had to go back to a much earlier library file.
