I have a Macbook Pro purchased in July.  I've noticed the past few days that when I get up in the morning and open my computer, it has a white screen with what appears to be a screen brightness or volume graph.  This volume thing is not the normal graphic for brightness or sound but is larger.  I've let the computer sit a few minutes with no change and each time have shut down with the power button and restarted. 


Can anybody offer any ideas on what could be causing this?  The computer seems to be working fine except for persistent iTunes freezes that have been happening for a while now.

    Take the machine in for hardware service, buy AppleCare and a external drive to make a TimeMachine drive.

    DS Store, your advise is to take the computer in for service, buy an additional year of warranty for the computer for the **** of it, and then get an external drive?  The first suggestion might get this problem resolved, but I'm not sure how your other two suggestions will??


    I don't have a solution to this problem either, but I do have slightly more useful information.  I bought my macbook pro in September, so it's a 2012 model, and I have also experienced this issue twice.  the first time was 2 days ago, and now again tonight.  the computer has gone to sleep many times in between without any problems.


    When this problem does occur, the hard drive will make a super loud sound as soon as I wake up the machine.  In addition, I also have a whitish tint on my screen and what appears to be either the volume control (or brightness) control displayed.  In my case it also appears as if the the volume or brightness is being increased on its own (white tick marks fill in).  I can also see the login box asking me for my password.  Fortunately though, after about 30 seconds of this, the screen will clear up, and I can login as normal.


    Unlike Bruce, I'm not having any problems with my iTunes, so I don't think that would have anything to do with it.  Here is my educated guess, and maybe Bruce can verify this as well.  A few days ago, and about a day before this issue started ocurring, Apple released a special update for 2012 MacBook Pros and Airs which addressed a couple of issues, including USB reliability.  I think that this update most likely caused this issue.  Anyone else experiencing this or have a solution?  Thanks!!

    It's a new machine only a few months old and under a one year warranty so the hardware repair will be fixed by Apple.

    If they don't have AppleCare the it extends the warranty for two more years after the one year expires.


    The machine is already showing signs of issues, it could have more like a day after the original one year warranty expires. So with repairing a MacBook Pro being so expensive, it's smart to buy the additional covereage with a problematic machine especially.

    There is free backup software on all Mac's called TimeMachine, if they don't have this already then now is the perfect time to do that at the Store and make sure the users personal data is backed up off the machine.


    Obviously if they have AppleCare and a backup solution already then it's not needed, but I tell people that because most don't.

    DS Store, I apologize for sounding rude in my post earlier.  I just felt that the information wasn't very specific to this particular issue, but it is good advice in general.  As for taking the computer in, it's very unlikely that the geniuses have had time to gain experience with this particular issue, especially since it seems sporadic in nature and if my theory holds true, it's also a new bug introduced just a few days ago.  Either way, it will be hard to duplicate the problem for a person who has never seen it before, so they will either reformat your system and tell you the problem is solved, or they will swap hardware (which is extremely unlikely since this is a software issue).  If they do reformat your system, then they're going to tell you that you shouldn't restore from a Time Machine backup since that will just restore the bug.  I think the best advice is to follow this thread until someone figures it out.

    Thanks for the discussion fellows.  I do have Time Machine hooked up with an external drive.  God I hope this isn't some sort of indication of a hardware failure.


    This has happened two days in a row and I didn't connect it to the update but it would be interesting to see if they did coincide.

    I've had that problem before - once: my compter had gone into deep hibernation for some reason and there was a 'progress' bar indicator that never seemed to fully engage, so I just held down the power key and rebooted and have never had it happen again.


    I'm curious, though... are you on mains or battery when this happens?

    My power cable is always connected when I go to bed so it's connected and the computer is fully charged in the morning.  I actually had a friend ask the same question today.


    This does seem to be related to some sort of "deep sleep" since I open and close the computer many times a day with no problems at all.  Is there some sort of process that occurs after sleeping a certain amount of time?

    My MBP is also plugged in when I have this problem.  I thought this issue was sporadic, but I realize now that it does happen every time my computer has been sleeping for a long time, like overnight, or all day while I'm at work.  I find it hard to believe that there are only 2 of us with this issue?


    I read up a little on that last update that was released for 2012 MBPs and Airs back on 11/8/12, and the ironic thing is that the update fixed a quick screen flash that some people were experiencing when waking up their machines.  This new bug (probably related to this update) is much worse than the problem they fixed!

    This morning I woke the computer and it was fine.  Yesterday after a bit of Googling, I disabled some processes in an effort to stop the iTunes hanging up and I'm not sure if any of that had an effect or it was just coincidence.  First I disabled Genius.  I never use it and apparently it can cause problems.  Second I trashed the download folder in itunes.  It was empty but several people online seem to think it contributes to problems with iTunes.  Finally, I reset my PRAM and fixed my permissions. 


    I have no idea if any of these things had any effect on the white screen or why they would.  Itunes seems to still be running weirdly.

    Zapping the Pram did sound like something to try and I'm willing to bet that it's what solved your issue. I was afraid to do it though since I'm new to Macs and have heard it wipes out some settings. Now that you did it, I will too probably but can you tell me what had to be reconfigured afterwards? Is it just brightness and volume settings? Thanks

    Hmm, I've zapped the Pram on many occasions without ever resetting anything.  Maybe I'm doing it wrong but I've never thought that I'd have to do anything afterwards.  I'm a long time Mac user but definitely not a techie person so it could just be my ignorance.

    I just got home from work and turned on my machine, and it did not act up this time.  The only thing that was different from the other times I've had the issue is that my external backup drive WAS already plugged in tonight. I used to always leave it plugged in, but lately I've been working on a shaky table and do not want to damage it.  I'm not sure if having the drive plugged in made a difference or not, but I'll probably leave it disconnected tonight to see what happens tomorrow morning.  If the issue returns, then I will definitely be zapping that Pram.

    If you've backed it up in Time Machine already, then I would think about taking it into Apple and have them look at it.  The thing that bothered me most was when you wrote you heard a loud noise from the hard drive. Often a hard drive that is losing it will make a clicking noise if it was anything like that.  I would just have them check that out.  If its just a couple of months old, you don't have to buy Apple Care to get it fixed, you have a year's warranty.  I do prefer Apple Care in the long run, becaues you get more phone service and the extra two years can be very handy if something breaks down.

    It's not so much of a clicking sound but more like a loud, high pitched burst, almost like the sound that parking the heads on the drive would make, amplified.  I'm going to keep monitoring my drive's S.M.A.R.T stats for now, and I'll definitely be taking it in if I see any anomolies.  At least I have till next September to figure it out.
