Screen is flashing and going nuts - desktop icons gone

Hi.... yesterday my G5 became possessed. The screen started flashing and appearing like it does right at start up, but no icons are on the desktop. Everything on the screen (in the menu bar) vanishes then reappears... but, I can open applications in the dock.... but they don't all work correctly...... ANY IDEAS
