Hi,

Your specs say OS X 10.8.2 which would mean Messages rather that iChat.

Messages gives you the iMessages account to use with your "registered" Apple ID.

You can of course have AIM and Jabber Screen Name and IDs set up as well.

I would start with using the Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) and it's First Aid option to Repair Permissions.

I presume when the app does start up it is showing at least one "active" chat in the Messages window ?

DO you mean you are using the "X" that shows up when you mouse over the name of the person in the Chat ? (which Closes/removes the chat from the window)

Do you mean you are using the File Menu option to Delete the Conversation ?

Is it an iMessages or other form of conversation ?

Sorry, yes, Messages. When the app finally starts up, yes, one chat is active. It is terribly slow to start.

If I hit X or right click to call up Delete, I get the a dialog box to delete the conversation. when I click the Delete button, nothing happens. Dialog box sits there and the app does not respond. Cancel will not remove the dialog box either. I have to Quit the app and start over.

I do not see a Delete conversation menu item under File menu.

I have used the app successfully before, deleting conversations and with a much quicker start up time than what I'm getting today. I use my registered Apple Id.

I verified my computer using the First Aid Verify Disk step and got an OK. Nothing to repair. Appreciate any help!

Hi,

Verifying the Disk tells you little.

It is looking at whether the files are on the Hard Drive in a manner that can be read and retrieved.

It is looking at the structure of the File System rather than whether the individual items are set to their optimum.

I would still try Repair Permissions.

I would also try a PRAM reset.

Shut down the computer.

Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

Hi,

In that case try a Safe Boot

Once it has started up launch Messages and see if there is any improvement.

After testing you will need to restart the computer so it is not in Safe Mode.

HI,

That does not sound good.

It sounds like there are deeper problems within the OS

I would download and Install theCOMBO version of the OS X 10.8.2 update and run it over what you have.

This may get around the need to Reinstall or Restore the OS

Hi,

I must admit to not having had to use it an I don't actually know.

The document I linked you to also does not mention it.

In these cases if Apple do not mention it it does not happen. (I was looking for Archive and Install ).

It would appear from the info that it completely wipes the disk and reinstalls the OS and those Apps you should have access to.
