Help? A bit new to numbers, possibly function help?

I need a little bit of help. Ok, I will try to explain this as best as I can. So, I have a list of names going down on the left hand side. Next to the column with the names are the days of the week, rate of pay, total hours, and total pay. I have a pop up menu for the names, and hours worked. The problem is... I would rather not put 0 hours worked, what I would want to do is have No Show (called in) and No Show (did not call in) options on the slider. However, if I select those, the total hours and the total pay get errors. Any help would be appreciated, I can post a pic if I need to. I tried to make it sound as simple as I could. Thanks in advancemm

use sum() around the reference to the cell with the pop-up:

User uploaded file

C2=SUM(B2)

This will turn the text without numerals into a value of zero and numeric entries into the same value
