what does it mean if my fan is running a lot? is my laptop in danger of overheating, and is there anything i can do to prevent damage?
Have you performed an SMC reset...
Also, open up activity monitor and Where it says "My Processes" Clock, and Choose all
Next, Click the the CPU% column and sort so the highest is on the top
monitor this when your fans are running high
If your fan is running a lot, it will be COOLER--the chance of overheating is less in most environmental conditions. However, the fan could break under constant RPM.
A Mac will shut down on its own if it gets too hot.
I have never had a fan break in the ten years I have owned any Mac laptop.
But if his fan runs excessively, then it's possible that he has a problem with that feature too. Only a night-long Apple hardware diagnostic could determine that, I think.
You can run Apple Hardware test too:
I don't believe Apple will do anything more than this anyway.
Run the extended tests.
I have tried and failed to make a Mac overheat, though wrapping one in an electric blanket while running Geekbench stress tests might do it.
