does itunes match take up any space on my laptop?

i have a macbook air and it doesn't really have too big of a memory. i want to download all my music and upload a bunch of CDs, but am trying to figure out some way to make it be stored externally.

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
