Can I watch a rented movie without wifi turned on? Ie. when I'm on a flight?

I am getting ready for a long Southwest flight and would like to watch movies on my iPad on the flight. SW's wifi ***** so hoping I can rent a movie prior and watch it on the plane without having wifi. If so... Anything I need to know on how to make his work?

Well, then there's this statement:

iTunes Store: Viewing and downloading HD content on iPad - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4095 > Movie Rentals on iPad > *Movies rented on iPad cannot be transferred to other devices and can only be viewed on iPad. * An Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback of movie rentals.

The statement has flexibility in interpretation though. Maybe you just need to start playback and then it will continue?

You need a WiFi or cellular connection. The rented movie does not show up under the Purchased tab in iTunes. But when you launch iTunes with a connection and pull up the movie, the small dialogue box no longer has the rental price it states Watch. Without a connection you can't launch iTunes so you're out of luck. I learned this first hand on a recent flight.
