What to do when you don't know the username to your MacBook (but you know the password) and the MacBook asks you for the username and the password and I don't know the username and I can't log in to my MacBook

MacBook, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Try restarting into the Recovery HD (Command+R). From there open Terminal from the Utilities menu bar option.

Type resetpassword at the command prompt. You should see a window open to allow you to select what user account you want to reset the password for. Maybe you will see the user account ID that goes with your password. If  you do, you can exit out of the reset password function, restart and login.

If that doesn't work, then hold command s at boot time to enter Single user mode,

follow the two commands to mount the file system, then type

    ls /Users/

and press enter, a list of names appear, type

    and press enter.
