Updating to iOS 6 will result in your having to have iTunes 10.7 on your computer. The earliest OSX that iTunes 10.7 can run on is Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.8. Be sure you can run Snow Leopard and iTunes 10.7 before updating your iPad.
