Can't get External Hard Drive to Recognize

Hi all,

I'm having trouble with my Fantom 1TB hard drive being recognized on my Macbook Pro. I've had this occasional problem before, but after unplugging the USB cord and plugging it right back in, it has always worked.

My computer is a 13" Macbook Pro from mid-2012 (only 6 months old). 2.8GHz Intel Core i7, with 8GB of Memory and running Mac OSX 10.8.2.

The hard drive isn't even showing up under the Disk Utility program. I've tried three different cords and I've tried plugging it into other macs and pc's, with no luck. At this point, if the drive is toast, that's fine, but is there at least some way to pull the information off of it?

Thank you in advance for any help ANYONE can provide!

Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing this issue by downloading the 10.8.2 Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.

You can install it over the update you already have with no issues.
