After restoring from TmeMachine I have only an ER BOOT drive. What happened?

My computer was very slow. Disk Utility from repair/utilities partition reported I needed to reformat and restore from TimeMachine. After restore thermometer indicated completion hours later, the spinning beach ball persisted. After a longer wait, I stopped the process (force quit with on-off button). Next, the only boot-volume was named "ER BOOT." This crashed into the monitor then restarted in an endless cycle. I am currently giving the process a second chance. What is happening?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
