Java for my mac

Hey, i have a iMac and i want to play .jar file but i cant because i get this messages popping up which says "The Java Jar file "client (6).jar" could not be launched. Check the console........" I been researching everywhere on the internet as i think the problem is that the developer created the .jar file using the latest version of java but coz i have Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (11A480b) i cant update java and also i cant find java preferences anywhere in my mac even checked utilities.

HELP PLEASE

Locate the version of Java that’s installed on your Mac OS X system...

1. Open the Utilities folder and run the Terminal application.

2. Type java -version and press Enter.

(space between java & -v important)

The version of Java that you have installed will then be displayed on the screen.

Power of Google to update Java. http://www.java.com/en/download/mac_download.jsp?locale=en

If that doesn't work to update the JRE try this. http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

i have tried downloading the Java 7 but coz my software is 10.7 i cant and says i need 10.7.3
