When I access the contacts list from "Add VIP..." in mail, some contact names are lowlighted and cannot be added to the VIP list. Why is this?

So I answered my own question - contacts need email addresses to be added to the VIP list - of course

I have a few contacts that are greayed out and I cant add them to the VIP list eventhough it has an email address
when I try to select contacts on my iphone to add to the VIP list, some names are lowlighted and cannot be selected - how come?
