Connecting my mac mini (late 2006) to an A/V receiver

I am having the hardest time connecting my late 2006 mac mini to an Onkyo A/V Receiver in order to view the screen on my Samsung TV. When I connect the mac mini directly to the TV using a DVI and audio to HDMI converotr that I purchased through monoprice, the TV as a monitor works perfectly. However, when I try the same configration through the Onkyo receiver, it does not work. Any ideas???
