Suddenly can't see the DVD drive on my macbook pro. How to fix?

My Macbook Pro can't see the DVD drive any more for some reason, even after power down and full reboot. It worked fine a few days ago. I also have put in a movie disc and it spun up but I had to use the "forceably stop the disc from spinning during a reboot with a piece of cardboard to create an eject sequence" trick to get the disc out. The machine simply doesn't see the drive anymore for some reason. Any idea how to repair this without having to reload the whole OS? I'm running Leopard I think... 10.5.8.

Thanks,

Thanks a ton for the solution Dale! I appreciate it! The solution that worked was to in fact reset the SMC by disconneting the power, removing the battery, holding down the power button for 5 seconds and letting go then, putting everything back together again and powering back up. It then saw the drive and I was able to confirm that the Pink Panther can once again be seen in that drive! Thanks again because now I can use it in front of my treadmill again when I go for a run! lol!

No longer Frustrated_MacbookPro_User for the meantime... (I've had OS issues I've had to deal with before and so I'm never sure if I'm out of the woods yet, lol!).
