File transfers using the messages app (using imessage account) are not completing - inbound or outbound.
They worked previously for me.. Now, without any changes, they all hang. The bar just spins and spins.. When I quit the app, it does notify me that transfers are still in progress.

Open Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities)
Find an item called FileTransferAgent.
If it is running highlight it and Force Quit it.
The item should pop up briefly when File Transfers start.
In some cases it appears to get stuck and then the Files do not move forward.
Once it have been Quit you should be able to get at least new Files and Pics-in-Chats
You may also get all the waiting ones.

Having almost the identical same problem as you Ralph. All of a sudden, within the last week. I can't transfer files b/w my Macbook (Lion 10.8.2/iMessage 7.0.1) and my iPhone (iOS 6.0.1)
I looked for the item filetransferagent in Activity Monitor and didn't find it. I do have the hanging file transfer with zero progress. iMessages with just alphanumeric characters go through, this *****... 😟

I should have been clearer.
As I post here almost everyday I tend to have read all the iChat threads and the majority of Messages tagged threads in Mountain Lion.
(I also have read all the Messages Beta Posts but no-one can post to that area any more)
From that I tend to amass enough info on some problems to state what the fix is.
In this case I have seen stalled File Transfers and elsewhere I have picked up the name of the item that shows in Activity Monitor.
I also have not posted it's full name here (sorry for any confusion). You should be looking for URLFileTransferAgent.
As I said in the earlier post it may not actually be visible as it starts and then stops so fast.
When there is a problem it is paused and the Files don't transfer.
