What update are you trying to install and what operating system are you running please?
I'm pretty sure its MAC OS X software update version 4.0.6 (270). Does that sound right?
"and what operating system are you running please?" It's listed by clicking on the in your title bar....go to About This Mac and it's in the 1st window.
Oh sorry, It's version 10.6.8.

I did a search of Google and Apples download page here and nothing comes up like that.
alright its version 10.6.8. Do you have any idea how I might circumvent this problem?
You could write down the updates Software Update wants you to install and then download them from the download section of this site.
But first, Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk for OS 10.6.8 and under. It shows you how in the link.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.
Then Repair Permissions.
No need to report any Permissions errors........we all get them.
