My iMac is running the old Mac OS X ver.10.4.11. What's the best way to upgrade my system to the current Mac OS X ver.10.7?

You have some questions, first exactly what iMac do you own please include the exact specifications including amount of RAM installe?. Also why only to Lion and not Mountain Lion 10.8?
Please answer all questions.
If the machine is running 10.4.x I would be very superised if Mountain Lion is even an option
I agree and I also think it may be able to run Lion either.
I just bought the new iPhone 5 and would like to add my music from my iTunes library to my new phone. But, my iTunes is only ver. 9.2.1, and this version is not seeing my new iPhone 5. Appreciate your help and advice.
With those specs you should be fine.
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:

Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs. You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
