Early 2008 Mac Pro

For some reason following booting up my Early 2008 Mac Pro running 10.8.2 Mountain Lion will NOT recognize my external hard drive connected via USB nor will iTunes 10.7 recognise both my iPhone 4 & iPad 2.

I upgraded to Mountain Lion yesterday and everything worked fine until booting this morning.

What is going on?

Thanks.

No the external drive does not appear in Disk Utility.

Also wondering why iTunes cannot see either my iPhone 4 or iPad 2, both connected via USB on the front of my Mac Pro?

The difficulties I am experiencing are similar to what occured when I first tried to upgrade to ML. Back then, shortly after ML's release, post install ML would switch off my Apple keyboard.

I have waited since then for a fix, and had hoped the issue to have been resolved by 10.8.2. It appears only partially resolved.

In the end the Apple employee at the Genius bar re-installed Lion and mentioned that after a Google search other Apple users with the same model as mine were reporting the same issues.

I may have to return to my AppleStore to have Lion reinstalled post a clean wipe of the ML HDD.

So since 10.8.2 uses hardware differently it doesn't like a certain piece of hardware.

It could be possible that ML doesn't like the pci-e USB card I have installed. Sadly I cannot operate without it as I need the extra USB sockets it provides. This pci-e card is standard pc hardware and not provided by Apple.

Therefore I would like to install 10.7.5 onto another HD and to bring up another issue, the App store reports an error when I try to download Lion, error 1004. Lion had no difficulty in using the usb card, which is usb 2.1.

Sadly, I am still unable to get my install of ML to work as expected and so I have come to a major decision, I am to leave the Macintosh platform in favour of Ubuntu Linux.

So instead of being an OSX / Windows 7 mix, I aim to be an Ubuntu / Windows 7 and above mix. This of course is to be installed on custom built pc hardware. I will get OSX Lion re-installed onto my current Mac Pro and then no further.

I still love my iPhone & iPad and look forward to carrying on with updating and using those as and when required.

Thank you all and I really miss you Steve Jobs, Apple would have taken my issues much more seriously and tried to help instead of being deaf to my enquiries.

I would mention make of my pci-e USB expansion if it had the make written upon it, it didn't come with any driver software either. I bought it as is at my local PC - World store.

What is Caldigit?

Do you or anyone know what the wattage is for power supply on my early 2008 Mac Pro?

If its 400w or more would an AMD Radeon 6670 work in my Mac Pro.

Thanks
