How do I get FCPX 10.6 to show date and time when I hover over a clip? I can so it in I movie and as I move over my clips the date/time is shown. I need it for that specific point in the clip not just the record start time.
FCP X doesn't, that info can be accessed either in the Inspector, or you can set it as a Browser column (fastest way). It used to, but 10.0.6 seems to have made it disappear.

BenB, will it show the time at the point in the clip that I am hovering over? I have a 6 hour video and am pulling out small clips from this but I need to know what the time is at each point.
When skimming (S turns it on and off), look at the Dashboard at the center of the tool bar. It will be reading the clip's timecode there. "M" will create markers so you can mark specific frames if needed.
Have you tried "view>show skimmer info" ?
I have that selected but it only shows where I am in the clip vs the actual time of date the clip was taken.
Again, it is a header in the Browser's list view. Right-click the column header bar, and make sure the metadata you want to see is checked off. Drag the individual column headers left and right to arrange them.
I have the import date selected and I can see that almost anywhere but what I really need is that when I scrub/select/do anything that it shows the current time at the place in the video that I have selected. iMovie does it just fine but for the life of me I can't get FCP to do it.
OK, professional editors do not use the time of day for editing, we use SMPTE Timecode (HH:MM:SS:FF). That is how FCP X is set up. Timecode shows in the Dashboard.
What exactly is your purpose is seeing the time of day (TOD timecode)?
I realize that my needs are outside of the normal editing workflow. I am a private investigator and last week I shot over 6 hours of surveillance video on a Sony video camera. Within this 6 hours of video there is at most 2 minutes of actual footage of my subject. So what I wanted to do was just import the parts of the clip I want, so I can avoid importing the whole 6 hours, and then add a text title of some sort that shows the date/time. My problem is that once I get this clip I have easy way of establising the TOD short of taking the clip capture time and then counting up using the SMTPE Timecode. In this regard iMovie makes it easier because I can just hover over the clip and see the TOD of that specific frame. iMovie on the other hand would force me to import the whole 6 hour video so i'm left moving between both programs which is less than ideal.
As a retired IT forensics specialist, I'd say find one of the video apps designed for legal video work. I'd also say you need to turn on the time/date overlay inside the camera. Some courts are going to require that.
Are you recording tape or digitally? What is that process? Are you capturing from tape? If so, in FCP X you can que up the tape, hit Import to start, stop when you want, and just capture only the clips you need.
