HELP!! MBP Core Duo Does Not Recognize Keyboard on Startup

I couple of days ago I installed OS X 10.6.0 (DVD) to a clean partition. When I restarted, I got an immediate kernel panic. I tried to restart from the OS X 10.6.0 install DVD, but the MBP does not seem to recognizing the keyboard when holding the C key! As well, I have tried every key combination I know to get the startup to proceed from the DVD (or FW drive), but no luck:

  1. Held C on startup - DVD accessed for a couple seconds, but still goes to HDD: kernel panic
  2. Held Option key, - no loader window; goes to HDD: kernel panic
  3. Held Opt-Cmd-P-R to reset PRAM - no chimes, goes direct to HDD: kernel panic
  4. Held Shift key (safe mode) - kernel panic
  5. Held T key to attemp target mode - kernel panic
  6. Remove battery and mag safe power to drain internal battery backup and reset PRAM; waited for about 5 minutes; pressed the power button for about 15 seconds; plugged in mag safe (no battery) - goes direct to HDD: kernel panic
  7. Repeat #6, but waited overnight - goes directly to HDD: kernel panic

I have tried every trick I know (short of removing the HDD) including plugging in a USB keyboard, (same results as built in keyboard).

FYI - Holding down the click button below the track pad DOES eject any disc in the DVD slot.

Does anyone have any other options that I can use to get at least to the DVD drive so that I can launch disk utility?

BTW - When I tried to boot with a Disk Warrior 4.3 DVD (which I have used many time on THIS mac), the disc was ejected immediately, then kernel panic.

I have also tried to go back to the original install DVDs, and even though I can easily hear the DVD drive accessing the DVD, restart still goes back to the HDD: kernel panic

Any help or suggestions getting the boot loader up, or restarting from DVD would be greatly appreciated.

My next attempt will probably be to remove the drive and try to repair it via a FW dock.

NOTE: the MBP is the ONLY Intel Mac I have access to, so I am not sure that DU can even repair the drive from a OS X 10.5.8 PPC mac. Thoughts?

TIA

I couple of days ago I installed OS X 10.6.0 (DVD)

Was this a retailed purchased universal dvd? A gray updated? Borrowed?

Run the Hardware Test dvd which is on your system dvd #1 that came with your computer - Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test

Kernel panics are usually caused by hardware - Kernel Panics? Don't panic too!

"You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) message appears (Mac OS X v10.5, 10.6)

PPC mac.

As far as I know, all Macbook Pros are Intel. Which model do you have?

PS Thank you for telling us your troubleshooting attempts.

As stated in items 1 & 2, and later in the "BTW", I can not access the DVD drive at all or the EFI Boot Loader.

I am aware. My initial point was to ask if I pulled the intel drive, would I be able to fix the drive with DU on a PPC mac OS X 10.5.8?

BTW, I have also tried CMD-V, but ZERO output, and CMD-S, and both result in system starting up with:

  1. Power light turns on, with a black monitor
  2. screen turns solid grey and the bootup chime
  3. apple logo on solid grey
  4. rotating gog under apple logo
  5. kernel panic

This process takes between 20 and 27 seconds and always with the same messages. I have attached snaps of the panic screen if they are of any help.

Thanks for the reply.

I am sure it is the OSX install, as I ran TTP and the ASD disc on the MBP prior, and no hardware issues were found. I also used Drive Genius to verify the sector map. But, it has me totally stymied as to why EFI is completly unaccessable.

I will pull the drive first and see if DU on the PPC can repair it. I will post the results.

Besides, taking the MBP in would probably cost more that the Mac is worth. or to replace it outright. And, I have not had the best track record with Apple techs. I usually have to tell them what is wrong before they figure it out. A couple exceptions, but not many... sigh...

Thanks

My experience over the last decade of dealing with kenel panics; all have been software issues, with the exception of one on a Quad Core PPC, where one of the CPUs was dieing. ALL the others were easily remedied by Disk Warrior repairing the file system issue.

But there is the rub. I have always been able to access the boot loader, or C key, so that I could boot with Disk Warrior. Not so, this time.

Obviously, this is just my personal experience. Your milage may very.

Anyway, back to my Sherlock hat.

I will keep you apprised.

One last closing comment.

I finally figured out the problem..... Sad to say, it was the Logic Board. All the kernal panics were the result of LB going through its last weezes, which eventually led to complete fail.

I took the MBP into the Service tech and he verified the LB was toast. I asked if he could see any physical reason for it to go (i.e. maybe I damaged it somehow), and was told that, physically, the board appeared pristene, so the failure was not something I did. The board just died.

Looking back, the previous owner did replace a lot of parts on warrenty (iSight, FW400/800 and USB ports, display light and trackpad), and I replaced the left fan within the first month of having it, so maybe, this was destined to eventually happen with this unit.

Anyway, I got a replacement LB from ifixit.com, installed it, and the MBP is working perfectly. So, diagnostic confirmed.

Now, to deal with some keyboard issues..... the Tilda, and escape keys are dead.......
