cannot empty trash

I dragged a movie, not a downloaded one, to the trash, and tried to empty the trash. I waited and waited, then got impatient and clicked "stop emptying trash", and it got stuck again. The only way out was to relauch the finder.

I took the movie out of the trash, and it emptied nicely. Then tried to bin the movie file and empty trash. Same problem. Now it says "0 items to delete", but won't let me shut down computer without relaunching finder.

Press and hold the Option Key then select Empty Trash.

If that does not work try some of the suggestions here.
