Not sure how to get my iMessages back from the server?

For various rreasons I had to restore from backup, I was told in store that I would be able to recoupe my missing iMesseages between today and the date of the last backup but haven't got them. Can anybody give enlightment onto the situation please?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

HI,

That sounds a bit misleading.

The iMessages servers can tell when an "new" device is added to the Apple ID and will start sending it the iMessages that are being sent back an forth form that point onwards.

If a device has been Off line such as a Home computer that is Asleep or turned Off then the iMessages servers will attempt to "Catch up" the iMessages it has missed.

This does presume there was an "start point" for the syncing to that device and that the the time differences are not too long.

If you Saved the Chats on the Mac and these are part of the Back up you made then you may have older chats.

Open Chats (because the saving only works on closing a Chat) will not be saved by this method.

Broadly speaking I would say that the Mac will not be seen by the iMessage server as a device that has been Off line and that iMessages will therefore NOT resync to it.

HI,

If you mean you have the Saved Chats from the closing of Chats before the issue arose and now you also have new iMessages (Chats) but the open chats that were not closed are not resyncing then that would be what I would expect. (That there is a gap between what you had originally Saved and what is being synced now).

I know that the machines is the same one.

However when you reset or Restore the Servers don't know that.

This can mean it "looks" as if is it a new Device being set up.

This may preclude it syncing Back as far as you want.
