On November 9 at 6:42 am, Time Machine shows my iCloud to contain 38 empty untitled Numbers files as well as the 3 files I had stored there. My 3 Numbers documents are now gone from iCloud and Time Machine won't restore them from earlier backups. Time Machine gives error code -8072. What does that mean?
Uncheck Documents & Data in the iCloud preference pane. Try again to restore the files. You may have to go back to an earlier snapshot.
Thanks for your suggestion, Linc, but the changed the situation but didn't resolve it. Now, the system works up until the point where it tries to copy the file. This progress window remains unchanged even overnight.
I guess you checked on www.icloud.com?
This looks like a drive malfunction. To secure your data, you need to make a second backup immediately, independent of the one you have. For that you need another external hard drive. After you've done that, launch Disk Utility and run Repair Disk on the old backup volume. It may take several hours. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If that doesn't solve the problem, boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) and do the same with the boot volume.
None of this worked. Each disk "appears to be okay." I'm feeling very discouraged, but thanks for your input!

There are ways to recover deleted files. That's a job for an expert. If the data is of high value to you, consult one.
