why is my hard drive not recognised by the airport extreme?

I've got a segate GoFlex 1TB USB 3.0 that's when connected to my airport extreme the Airport utility shows an alert "Disks need to repair". However the disk can't be recogonised by Airport extreme. Any suggestions?
