iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem.

I am running on OS X 10.7.5 and iPhoto 9.4.2

Each time I try opening iPhoto it fails to launch.

I have tried dragging iPhoto to the Trash and re-installing via the App Store. I repeated that and also removed the two pkg. files which contained iPhoto in the name before re-installing. Neither of these worked.
If I lose the photo library from the last month I don't mind too much- the rest is backed up.
Does anybody know how I can get iPhoto working again?

Thank you.

It appears that iPhoto is missing a framework so it needs to be reinstalled. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the:

HD/Library/Receipts folder (10.5 and earlier)

or from the /var/db/receipts/ folder (10.6) .

User uploaded file

or from the /private/var/db/receipts folder (10.7 or later)

User uploaded file

Then install iPhoto from the source it came from originally.

I have found the PhotoFoundation

User uploaded file
When I try to open it this message appears:

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

User uploaded file

Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.

4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

5 - Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Sorry to be dense, but it won't let me launch it. I keep getting the error message:

iPhoto can't open because of a problem.

Please check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates......

I am on OS X 10.7.5. The iPhoto I reinstalled I found under 'purchased" items in the App Store. Says it was purchased Oct. 2012.

?????????

thank you so much!

Two more tests:

First:

1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your

User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.

2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your

User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).

User uploaded file

or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto
folder

User uploaded file

3 - launch iPhoto and try again.

NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

Next, if the above didn't help, log into another user account on your Mac and try running iPhoto from there.

UUGGHHH. I tried all of that AND logged on as a guest user and I am still getting the same message every time I try to open iPhoto.

It sounds like a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated but to do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the:

I have tried everything as above. None of it works.

Went into my local iStore and they had a look at it.
The only thing they could suggest was that the iPhoto software had become incompatible with the Library (possibly through an update).
The library remains undamaged however, and can still be viewed using Preview:

Right Click iPhoto Library> Show Package Contents> Masters.

Your photos will all be arranged by Event Dates and can be viewed individually, just not with iPhoto.
This means no editing etc.

The guys there are not owned by Apple and couldn't find any other issues with iPhoto- they suggested booking an appointment at a Genius Bar.
Unfortunately I am at a Unviersity where the nearest Genius Bar is over 100 miles away so it's going to have to wait until Easter...

Then you can try the following:

Starting over from scratch with new library

Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:

1. Open the library package like this.

User uploaded file

2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.

3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.

User uploaded file

This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
