Can I resize photos in iPhoto? I can only see how to crop. If iPhoto can't do it, is there a recommended free (or inexpensive) software for simple editing such as resizing and cropping? Thanks much.

The target user is a person like jeammarieTodd that didn't know to resize the photo by exporting it.
That's exactly why I think "Size or Scale" need it's own menu option.
First, "crazy" wasn't the best description to use and you make all valid points. But I meant it in one sense. Cropping is so simple in iPhoto. I use Graphic Converter and Photoshop Express and iPhoto is my go to App for cropping.
The only time I ever need to resize an image is for use in iWeb. For the web it seems you want the highest quality image with the smallest bits. With Graphic Converter, not only does it do that, but it tells me what it's doing.
If all you want to do is resize an image an not be concerned about the data associated with it other that it's dimensions, then iPhoto is perfectly fine.
But I do wish iPhoto had it's own Edit option for Size vs the Export option. Just on users opinion.

Not sure why you think that's crazy. iPhoto preserves the original file, right? So, if you resized the image in iPhoto then you would have two copies who's only difference was size. Waste of space. Why would you want a smaller size? It will be for a particular purpose: so export at that size, use the export and then trash it. No waste of space.

I edit stories and photos for a jobs board, using Wordpress. I used to use Piknik (not sure of spelling) but then Google acquired it and I don't know what happened to it but I understand it's not available like it used to be. I need to resize photos to one of two different sizes, either 250 x 200 pixels, or 250 x 148 pixels, 72 dpi. Sometimes a photo may need to be cropped, too. It's awkward to say the least to have to crop in one program and resize in another, and some programs (I'm experimenting with Acorn on a free trial) don't seem to let you control all the parameters.

iPhoto will let you crop and then File/Export to resize. I think iPhoto automatically converts to 72 DPI.
The only advantage to Graphic Converter is you can really get the file size lower (in megabits) and removal of meta data where they load faster in a website.

Yes you can, but it's not very precise. Large, small, medium, etc., don't help. I need to be able to resize to specific dimensions, 250 x 200 and 250 x 148 pixels, at 72 dpi.

The problem is that I'm not sure how to crop to be able to resize to the desired dimensions without distorting the aspect ratio. I seem to remember Picnik had a way to let me kind of feel my way through to get both the crop and resizing right, all in one program, so I didn't have to make any "final" decisions until everything was right.
So I think I'll check out Graphic Converter. It's tax deductible, I guess, since I'm a contractor. Thanks again.
Need help resizing PHOTO THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN CROPPED AND EXPORTED FROM ORIGINAL
Here is steps;
Opened original photo, did some retouches, then cropped the item, then exported to desktop.
Now I would like to resize this photo, the entire photo.
How do I do this in iphoto or in another program with out having to purchase or download a trial offer.
Any suggestions?

2 - once you have exports a photo iPhoto is no longer involved
3 - you can resize a photo during export to the desktop
4 - you actually need to share information about what you have and wha tyou want to do to get valid help - versions etc

In response to Number 4. Ok Larry, So I am trying to resize a photo in Iphoto for the Facebook dimentions of the banner which is 851 x 315 to fill the banner fully without it cutting over the edges. So I cannot import it from desktop then resize it by adding it to iphoto for dimention corrections? I have not exported it once. 😕 - Komu
in iPhoto crop to 851 x 315 - this will make the imae fit the banner exactly (it does not "resize" the photo - it does change the photo pixes dimensions ratio
To resize export it with a maximum dimension of 851 and you will now have an image on disk that is 851 pixels by 315 pixels

Thanks for the tip on resizing. I usually use photoshop to size my photo, but since I just got this new macbook pro, I didn't have photoshop on it yet and I desperately needed to resize something, and your tip help me do it.
But if anyone is looking to resize photos to a specific dimensions, you should use photoshop. Not a bad program. iPhoto has its limitation and I wish that apple would include that feature into the program.
You can resize to any exact specific size you what by cropping and exporting from iPhoto with a maximum dimension

Easy in iPhoto
Crop to the dimensions you want (250x200 for example) and export (file menu ==> export) using a custom size setting the max dimension to what you want (250 in this example)

Larry, it isn't that i didn't want to pay attention to your comment. I did pay attention. I didn't want to do the cropping part. I want my entire image intact. I appreciate your advice and will read more closely next time.
Terence, I still use photoshop because I do some heavy lifting in the software and been using it for a long time. I will however post a video tutorial of what you just showed me about resizing in preview so that apple fans can find out how to do it easier..

If you want a specific six you must drop to that size - you can not make a 3200x2500 image 3200x2200 with cropping - if the image is already the proportions you want then of course you would not crop - you would only export
But the general answer to having a specific size is to crop to that size and then export using the maximum dimension feature - there is no other way to get aan arbitrary specific size

iPhoto is junk software. You can't re-size a photo. I tried 6 times and every export remained the same size no matter what I tried. This feature should not be barried. If it worked right they would list it properly in the menu. Useless software. They better hurry up with their new version.
