Apple haven't made any announcements over the future of the iPod classic but I wouldn't expect a revised model any time soon. If it does what you need, or is the best compromise, then buy one, if not find a model that suits you better.

It's there anyway where we can leave suggestion to the guys at Cupputino to make a new iPod Classic or not discontinue the old one. the Cloud system might seem to do the job but at this stage. it's still **** and not as productive as how we use to have it as a harddrive. Maybe the new iPod touch could stack up as many flashdrive to replace the harddrive as we can see that flash is way faster. the new Macbook Retina has a 500gb flash in it. i think they can do the same thing for the iPod Classic. Most of us are still huge music/movie lover who still require a big memory to carry our enormous journey with us on the road. And i don't think Apple is realising that.

Back in 2008 Toshiba model number (MK2431GAH) did in fact make a 240 GB hard drives designed specifically made for the iPod Classic. Apple (Macintosh) decided to go another route and introduced the iPod touch. If you do a Google search or E-Bay search you will be able to find the hard-drive. I know their are Apple Corporate Resellers that are willing to sell or install the new hard drive along with a better lithium ion battery.

As an FYI, it won't fit in the current iPod classic, because that 240GB 1.8-inch hard drive is the two-platter thicker design. I believe that last full-sized iPod model that used both the thinner and thicker 1.8-inch hard drive was the 6th gen "original" iPod classic, sold in 2007-2008. The older 5th gen iPod "video" also used both drive types. The current 7th gen iPod classic only uses the thinner drive.

So, anyone who wants to upgrade needs to have an iPod that uses the thicker drive.

If you want you can just buy a new 240gb iPod classic. I tried to upgrade my 6-generation iPod myself but ended up screwing it up. I tossed the whole thing in the trash. I bought a new 7-generation 160gb iPod classic a few years ago. I recently discovered this 240gb iPod classic I bought one it works very well I love the hard-drive space. I personally have a 6tb terabyte external hard drive that is full of my music I accumulated over the years. I know people hesitate buying products from China but well lets face it Macintosh manufactures its good over seas in China. I am sure there are some Apples employees who work in the factories that had a side gig remanufacturing these iPods converting them into 240 gigabytes. There are a few websites who sell the 240gb iPod’s with a 2-year warranty.

I have a much older 4th gen iPod, with upgraded storage. There's something very "pure" about an iPod with a monochrome LCD screen that is totally focused on playing audio, and nothing else. 🙂 And that model has very good sound.

The upgraded storage is a compact flash card on an adapter. Currently, I'm testing it out with an 8GB CF card, and it works wonderfully. The iPod is significanly lighter. There is no hard drive spin-up delay, or slight hum and vibration from the hard drive when spinning. The screen is easily viewable, even in bright sunlight, with no backlighting. The battery lasts longer. It should be MUCH more resistant to shock.

A 32GB CF card is only about $30 these days, and there is one 64GB on Amazon that is less than $60. A 256GB CF card is REALLY expensive, but that price will no doubt come down too, over time. I think you can use these in the later "big" iPods as well, with a different adapter.

I'm going to get a 32GB CF card to put into that iPod soon...
