Try this: Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again.

Thanks, after some more research and time trying various settings and deleting and re-setting email accounts all now seems ok. Also the problem was apparent when using a free wifi hotspot and this may have been part of the problem. Thanks anyway for your input.
