This is my first book order and I am a first time owner/user of a Mac. Got to the point of "Uploading" and after 8 hours of trying, progress bar showed no progress. "Cancel" upload would not work either. I was able to create a PDF file of the book and saved it to documents before the whole upload process. Had to do a force quit and shut down. Tried 3 more times the next morning. Same problem and iPhoto hadseveral "unexpected shut downs".

But then...I opened Mac in "safe mode", tried to buy book 3 more times and at some point a box appeared saying something about repairing photo files and I clicked yes. After the repair was completed, I shut down, reopened in regular mode to try one last time and finally everything worked! Took about 2+ hours to complete. Don't know if it was a corrupt photo file, don't know if it was my ISP (use a wireless broadband service), but whatever it was, it finally worked and I can breathe again! Thank you for your quick response.

Well done - I am also running a thread on the very same subject - can't upload and get the computer locking ujp etc, force quit not working, safe mode doesn't work - when I tried it the computer shut down. Also had a file saying that a repair was necessary - didn't help. Have ordered in the past with Lion and the previous iPhoto version.

Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and apply the fix below:

Fix #1

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

User uploaded file

Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.

After each run thru the repair process see if you can create a PDF file of the book as described in this Apple Document: iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it. If you can try ordering the book. If you can't finish trying all of the otpions and then boot into Safe mode and try there.

Ok I have tried this and apart from finding one photo which was missing from the library - no joy. Still won't upgrade - what happens it assembles the book, then when it come to upload it jumps to about one fifth of the way immediately then stops. I cant even use force quit - every thing frozen. I have now got a complete back up of my library and am thinking of deleting all the photos, iPhoto, re-installing, putting back my library and trying again. Do you think this is an option or a waste of time.
Thanks

You can try the following but will have to recreate the book from scratch:

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

  • Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
  • Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
  • Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
  • In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
  • Click on the Create button.

  • Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
