By third party we mean a place that is not an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or Apple Authorized Distributor (AAD) - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434
I browsed the iFix web site. Nowhere does it specifically state they are an AASP and usually places that are will make that immediately obvious. Their FAQ mostly mentions how to set up a franchise and does not state that repairs made by them will not void any Apple warranty. Apple is very particular about anybody working on their devices and if they detect somebody else has worked on a device (even if they do a good job) they could refuse to even look at a device again (warranty or not) in their shop. I'm not passing judgement on other companies, I'm just observing this so the OP knows in advance.

"An iPhone that is ineligible for warranty service may be eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service. For example, an iPhone that has failed due to damage or liquid damage is ineligible for warranty service but eligible for OOW service. However, certain damage is ineligible for OOW service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications."
The underlined clause could be interpreted by Apple to be any sign of anybody else having worked on a device. This isn't just Apple. If somebody is going to warranty a service then they want to make sure they are not also covering anything that might have been caused by somebody else working on the device previously.
I dont work at the repair dep but the last time i inquired on behalf of a customer via yoobee in new market, one of the staff said it may cost more then the ipod itself and also a fee would be charged as impact damages are not under warranty. if you live in aux
iFix & Repair is a NON thrid-party place. I guarantee that iFix & Repair will help. Plus it will NOT VOID your warranty. Trust me with this, I had my iPod Touch fix there.... and I got a friend that works at iFix & Repair in South Florida....
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price:
Apple - Support - iPod - Repair pricing
($99 for 8, 16 and 32 GB and $199 for 64 GB)
A third-party place like the following maybe less. Google for more.
iPhone Repair, Service & Parts: iPod Touch, iPad, MacBook Pro Screens
If u live in the USA... go to iFix & Repair.... better deals on iDevice parts at great deals (cheaper than getting it fix or replaced by Apple.
Realize in general that having a device repaired by an unauthorized third party will void remaining warranty and also might result in Apple ever being willing to work on it for any issues at all, even out of warranty. If a device is pretty old then it may only warrant inexpensive repairs and a third party is fine.
