Sending iphone Pictures in texts which are too big for some Smartphones

When sending pictures in texts there used to be an option of 3 different size formats. Small/Medium/Large. There is only one available now which is too big on some smartphones.

The HTC Wildfire has a restriction of 300kb and a text with picture I tried to send, could not be sent directly to the phone, instead it went to a web address to view. I also tried to share contact details with picture and the file was also too big. I also tried the first picture to another old Nokia without problem.

Can anyone tell me if this is a problem with the latest Apple Software? Will they be fixing it so that we can select the picture size again to allow for picture size restrictions so we can send smaller photos to actually share our pictures.

Anyone know?

Has anyone had the same problem?

Any answers welcome. Many thanks in advance. I hope they sort it quickly.

Thanks for your reply but I'm not confused and I am talking about MMS Text Messages and sending them with Pictures. As mentioned before the Software updates you could select from 3 size options.

The Old Nokia is on 02 and the HTC is on Tesco Mobile (using 02 network) the Old Nokia works fine but the HTC has a max kb of 300. The iphone pics are too big (in the 1000kb) so will not send directly to the Smartphone

That was my fault for stating SMS not MMS.

Even before the software updates you couldn't do that. Not on the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S. Perhaps the iPhone 5 allows this yet I doubt it.

Thats funny as I sent an MMS picture to my husbands phone today (not an iphone) and it worked as an MMS. He also sent one back to me to make sure I was receiving as I understand that some iphones aren't receiving picture messages. I also looked to sending the picture as an email and it went straight into a an email message without giving me size options to reduce. Maybe it's the latest software updates but I also distinctly remember having 3 size options when I first got my 3gs. I also checked the 3gs user manual and it clearly states Email Photos and videos, send them in MMS messages, or publish them to a mobileme gallery (page21 of the iphone 3gs user guide)

So I can still send MMS messages ... I just can't reduce the size options anymore.

Hi Chris. Thanks for your reply.

I'm working on Wifi at the moment and it's not giving me any options to reduce the images.

I might try switching it off and just using 3G but I don't think it's going to make any difference.

My message setting are on for imessage and for SMS/MMS so if I'm not sending to an iphone or if imessage won't work for any reason it will use the SMS/MMS settings.

I'm more inclined to think it's the later software updates.

It just seems strange that my husbands old Nokia received the picture as an MMS without problem but the HTC has restrictions and won't allow it as it's too large and sends you to the 02 website to view online.

I'd be interested to know if any other Smartphone users have a max of 300kb and can't receive iphone pictures to their phones.

Generally restrictions had to do with the carrier. With iMessage, that is not as much of a factor since you are using data like you do with an email. However, MMS to a non-iOS device does use the carrier, and does use a cellular connection, even if you are connected to wifi. Carriers may have removed restrictions in sending, but this restriction you define with the HTC could be something within its own OS. It could be something else to research. I do have to say that I remember the settings you describe, but have not seen them of late. However, I know that everyone in the family here has an iPhone, so we all use iMessage.

Thanks again Chris,

I've just tried to see if I could get any more info from the 3gs User Guide and also found some MMS Info on page 325.

It also has some info on adding Photos on page 333

If MMS isn't supported by your carrier, camera image doesn't appear and you can't send photos or videos ... This doesn't count in my case as 02 support this.

Send a Photo or Video: Tap Camera Image. Then tap 'take Photo or Video', or tap 'Choose Existing' and then select an item from a photo album and tap choose.

The size limit of attachments is determined by your carrier. If necessary, iphone may compress the photo or video.

Well this clearly doesn't work for the HTC but I'm still more inclined to think that perhaps the Apple updates have removed the size reduction options. The carrier (02) is able to take the MMS from me but the family member with the HTC who is using the 02 network through Tesco needs investigating why there is a limit to kb's.

I shall look into this and see what I can find out. Perhaps it's a combination of the Apple Software and the Carrier people are using which is causing the Picture problems.

Well, if it is working with the iPhone and not the HTC, there is something that is restricting it. Since your network is handling it, it could be their network or their phone. You mention it is the same network as yours, but it is being used by a different carrier. That could be a sign there. Apple may have removed the functionality when they introduced iMessage, but I have no idea, just guessing. Maybe there is a restriction on the Tesco side. Maybe they have restrictions since they are just using the 02 network. 02 may restrict how much bandwidth they can utilize. Heaven only knows. Good luck.
