When I bought my MacBook from the Apple store (about a year ago) they gave me an HP 3054A printer for free. I had a working printer so I didn't set it up immediately. Now I try to set it up and I get a message saying no driver is available. Has anyone been able to use an HP 3054A printer from a MacBook (using Wi-Fi)?

There is a HP Update from apple that contained all of the drivers for HP printers. That solved all my printer problems.
Try running Software Update to see if there is an update. If there is please follow the on-screen instructions. If there isn't open System Preferences - Print and Scan - highlight your printer on the left and right click it and choose Reset Printing System...

My system is up to date. No updates available.
The HP 3054A does not show on the left. When I try to add it (click on the + on the print & scan screen) it tries to find a driver to download and fails, saying no driver is available.
Where do you get that update? When my system tries to find an update for the 3054A it says none are available.
OK, how is the printer attached to your computer, USB, WI-FI, etc.. before we proceed. Also look in:

To see if it's supported. We have no idea if it's a laserjet, OfficeJet, OfficeJet Pro etc... so it's a little tough for us to tell. HP makes hundreds of printers so we don't know exactly which one you have. Once you have determined it's a supported printer we can try some troubleshooting, until then we're taking stabs in the dark.

And best to set the printer up initially with a USB cable, then configure the wireless if needed. This is an older model HP (more than a few years), the early HP wireless can be a bit flaky.
When I try to add the HP 3053A as a printer, it initially says there is a software update available from Apple.

That update says it is vor Leapord. I'm on Lion (10.7.5)
HP is the manufacturer so navigate to www.hp.com and click Software & Drivers and follow the links.
I am running Lion 10.8.2 and it installed and fixed my issues.
I see

on the list of supported printers. The printer does indicate it is a "J611".
Been there, done that.
The driver is downloaded and installed but I can't create the print queue for that priner. The system wants another set of code. It says Apple has it then it says it can't find it.
OK, I download and installed that update. No joy. It still won't let me add it as a printer on the "Print & Scan" screen.
I already downloaded and installed that package from HP.
