i am using the same apple id for facetime in my iphone and mac. now, only my iphone can receive and make facetime calls. why can't facetime calls in my mac get through?

i am using one apple id for facetime in my iphone and mac. my phone is able to receive and make calls while my mac is not able to do both. what is the problem.
