How do you delete a downloaded podcast episode after you listened to it (but keep it in the list, not as a download)?

I have downloaded many podcast episodes and I feel they must be taking up a large amount of space on my iPhone (not sure how to check this). In any case, I see that you can delete a podcast episode but it completely removes it from the podcast episode list.

I want to be able to delete a podcast episode taking up space on my iPhone but leave the episode remain in the podcast list (not as a downloaded episode) in the event I want to revisit it in the future. Is there a way to do this?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.1

The issue was (it works in the current version), that the played episodes were supposed to be deleted automatically according to the settings, but they weren't.

You could delete them manually of course so they won't take unneeded space on your device, but since I listen to a lot of podcasts that was quite a tedious task.

I am quite happy that this bug was fixed (mostly).
