Hey Benport,
I have the solution to your problem. If you have an iMac then pull out the power cord and hold the power button for 5 seconds to reset the mac. Then put the power cord in and it should be fixed!
To activate the Apple Hardware test you must restart your iMac and hold Option key + "D" before the Apple Chimes.
thanks Bodycalming,
I tried that, with no luck.
The iMac is normally loading, ignoring the diagnostic command...

yeah, I tried all that stuff...
the strange thing is I don't even get the message "Apple Hardware Test does not support this machine"

That only works on a Mac that's capable of Internet Recovery, which a 2008 iMac is not.
Appears you got bit by ML which seems to blow away the AHT. See my solution at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4427984?answerId=20014699022#20014699022 on how to restore it and get CMD+D to work on your machine.
@ baltwo: this won't work for me since I don't have disk 2 (everything downloaded from App Store);
@Linc Davis: I begin to think you're right...
my iMac early 2008
That machine came with two install discs, #1 for the OS and #2 for additional installs and AHT.. Nothing to do with MAS or ML.
based on this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1883 my iMac (24-inch, Early 2008) needs 3A139 AHT.
baltwo: I've never had install discs, so my question is: where can I download it?
You can't. Call AppleCare and request replacement discs. They're available for a nominal S&H charge.
thanks for your time, baltwo
hello baltwo,
I've tried to run the AHT by holding down D, D+cmd, D+option... none of them activates de AHT. I have Mountain Lion and a fan that runs loudly all the time 😟
