Help! I'm on my fifth hard drive!

My hard drives keep crashing. I'll install a new hard drive, install the OS, and it will run like a dream for about 3-4 weeks. Afterwards, the computer is constantly thrashing the drive and it takes forever to do simple things like load web pages or type in a dialog box. Starting the computer starts out quickly after a new install, but bogs down

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.

Take these steps when you notice the problem.

Step 1

Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.

Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.

Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.

Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.

Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?

Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)

Step 2

You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.

Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.

Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.

When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.

Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

Hello Mr. Davis. Thank you for your assistance.

Step 1: Safari is the largest %CPU. It alternates between 1% and 20%. Kearnal_task is 1.9%, everything else is under 1%.

Before restart:

%user 9%

%system 1.25

% idle 96%

Free: 809MB

Wired 328MB

Active 1.00 GB

Inactive 901MB

Used 2.2GB

Page ins 21GB

Page outs: 19.5GB

Swap used 3.18 GB

Reads in/sec 0

Writes out/sec 0

After restart:

%user 2%

%system 1%

%idle 95%

Free: 2GB

Wired 216MB

Active 557MB

Inactive 207MB

Used 985 MB

Page ins 107MB

Page outs: 0

Swap used 0

Reads in/sec 0

Writes out/sec 0

Restarting 'calmed' the hard drive down. We don't do anything intensive. We basically use Safari and Mail and occasionally VMWare. We have four users logged in. Maybe memory isn't being released.

Nov 16, 2012 3:59 PM in response to Melnibonean

First, you need to rebuild a system cache.

Back up all data.

Boot in safe mode.* This will cause certain caches maintained by the system to be rebuilt. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  1. Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
  2. When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.

Safe mode is much slower to boot than normal.

When the login screen appears, reboot as usual (not in safe mode.). There's no need to log in while in safe mode.

*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, proceed as below.

You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy into the Terminal window — do not type — and press return:

sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force

You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.

Reboot.

You also have a problem of excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.

That can happen for two reasons:

(1) You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or

(2) You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.

Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination. In Activity Monitor, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If one process (not including "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more memory over time without ever releasing it.

This suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:

sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total

where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details:

Memory Usage Performance Guidelines: About the Virtual Memory System

If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.

I'll keep a lookout for the memory leaks.

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.

Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.

When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

I used Mac Software Update. That was a mistake. After upgrading Safari, it would no longer load. I ended up reinstalling the OS from disk and running Software Update again. I'm fully up-do-date; OsX 10.6.8.

I didn't erase the disk because I don't think the hard drive is bad. It's only a few weeks old, on which I installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard and imported the user data.

I always use the Snow Leopard Upgrade disk to reinstall the OS. I then use Software Update until there are no more updates available, except for Safari in this iteration.

That dyld library just does not want to be repaired:

1. Asking someone to erase a drive is not something to be taken lightly, and should be used as last resort.

2. Safari is the memory issue leak issue. Leaving it open, doing nothing overnight, causes the physical memory to fill and overflow onto the disk, slowing down the system.

Sorry I ****** you off. I'll back up the system, erase and restore when I get home next week. Thanks for the input.

Jan 7, 2013 4:00 PM in response to Linc Davis

Yep,

That was a total *****.

Backed up two copies of about 1/2 terrabyte of information using Time Machine. I'm glad I made sure i did two copies because one was bad. The backup never finished and was left with the "InProgress" file extension. It may be recoverable if I change the extension. I don't know and don't care. Migration assistant couldn't see the drive, though Finder could.

Basically three days to back up and install. So much for easy. I couldn't use Cmd-R to reinstall. not sure why, don't care. I reinstalled from 10.6.3 disk and upgraded all apple items from there. Right now, I have only Apple OS software and iLife on the machine.

BTW: I DO NOT TRUST Time Machine to do anything but occassional backups. It is happy to back up a corrupted file as a change and later erase the good file when it drops off the back end of the file storage. I found that out why trying to recover my OS from TM. Not cool. So, every 3-4 months I back up all the user files and reinstall apps when things crash.

So, I don't have the dyld issue anymore.

Back to the original question though. I really am on my fifth hard drive and I don't know what is going wrong. This brand spanking new drive got corrupted or something after just a couple weeks. The same symptoms as other drives and installations before crashes; slow internet response, unable to get mail, can't save passwords, lots of other little stuff. Today even, Mail took six attempts at sending an e-mail. It took five tries at downloading the iPhoto updates before I got a good uncorrupted file.

I haven't had the machine up long enough to know if Safari is still leaking memory. I have 1.5 GB free though and haven't seen sluggishness.

I'm seriously considering switching back to Windows. I bought an Apple so I no longer had to worry about stuffl like this. Sad.

Help! I'm on my fifth hard drive!
