Q: Will this update require me to re-activate my phone?

I don't want to use the update if it requires my phone to communicate back to Apple about my policy. In other words, I don't want to get through the activation process like when erasing all contents and settings on the phone does.

If you have iOS 6 and you want to update to 6.0.1, it doesn't require an activation, only to major versions (for example, iOS 5 to 6)

I'm not sure what you are talking about concerning "policy". It is necessary to communicate to the Apple server to verify the download of the iOS and the installation.
