Hi, I'm having massive problems adjusting the length of my transitions. Can't go longer than 3 secs, tried ctrl  D, adjusting the preferences and re-installing. What's going on? I used to be able to go up to 10 secs! Seriously need some help in understanding this it's driving me mad! Thanks.

This is the precision editor. The area under the hand icon is the handle for that clip. It's the area of media beyond the edit point. If there isn't enough media there the transition cannot be lengthened.

How long you can make a transition depends on how much available media you have beyond the edit point on each clip. If there's only three seconds of media on either clip, beyond the marked edit point, that's as long as you can make the transition. Double click the edit point to open the Precision Editor and you will see what's going on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnZTltTPMUA -- there's a little about making transitions in Motion ("fixing" the lengths) at the beginning, but it's fairly comprehensive for FCPX.

Thanks haven't had a chance to try it yet, but will have a bash! Sounds like that is the problem, does keep going on at me there's not enough, which is strange, oh well hopefully it will work!

Sounds interesting, wouldn't mind having a go at that I'll have a look at the video, not sure it sorts my current problem, but thanks all the same!

Forget about transitions.... Do it manually...Keyframing is simple as H... in FCPx... Transitions in FCPx are a pure nightmare.. You cant adjust left/rigth independently... adjusting either moves the other... Aside from that adding a transition to a clip covers the whole clip... Cant see what is underneath it.. And if you have transitioned the whole clips... You cant even select the clip to add color cc or effects to it, without having to move aside the transition..

FPCx is about the most fantastic "NLE" I have ever worked with but the way transitions are implemented is a HUGE step back from even older NLEs... Been reporting this many times to their feedback. Hopefully they will come around eventually

Well that explains why it's being a royal pain! I seriously didn't expect it as this piece of software is widely used in the industry! Hopefully they will notice and make some modifications, thanks for the tip I need to get on and see if any of these suggestions help!

Not sure what Studio Engineer means about keyframing. I think perhaps the reference is to audio transitions. Is that your problem? The way FCP works with video transitions is pretty common throughout professional applications. They all require handles to create transitions and do not, as a matter of course, use available media and shorten the project.

Well I finally got round to trying your tip out, but i'm not entirely sure what I'm looking at. I can't see a potential problem, if there is one it's not obvious :S Any clues?

  • Ookami1987 Level 1 Level 1

No my problem is video transitions not audio. What do you mean by handles? I was able to add transitions no problem before hand. Am I missing a step?

Right coolies, now I know what I'm looking at so in short, you need an extra couple of seconds for the transition correct? Do you create the handles manually or are they automatic?

  • Ookami1987 Level 1 Level 1

Sorry another thing I thought of, doesn't it matter if the entire clip is there? It's not broken its quite a large video clip, could that be a problem as well? Does this interfere with the handles? Sorry to keep bothering you, your email must be full of my replies by now!

If you have the whole clip in the timeline, it won't have any handles.

Coolies thanks for your help! Everything's sorted now!

    Really appreciate it thanks loads!
