Airplay with no internet connection?

A friend wants to mirror from his iPad 2 (WiFi Only) and iPhone 4S (Verizon unlimited data) to a TV using an Apple TV (3rd Gen). Problem is the location has no wifi or internet service. Is an internet/network connection required or can the IOS devices "talk" directly to the Apple TV? Would a router (even with no internet) connected to the AppleTV help? He does have the HDMI adapter to connect directly to the TV but being able to get farther away would be more convenient.

I'd normally test this out on my equipment, but am traveling and trying to get him a quick answer. Thanks for any help.

>Problem is the location has no wifi

?? So what network is the AppleTV connected to? How are they using AppleTV if it has no network connection?

>Is an internet/network connection required or can the IOS devices "talk" directly to the Apple TV?

Internet no, network yes, of course. How would it connect if there is no network connection to connect to.

Yes, you have to have a network connection or AppleTV is just a paper weight. And the iPad and iPhone need WiFi to have a network connection at all.

>He does have the HDMI adapter to connect directly to the TV

But, what is AppleTV connected to go get it's content? There has to be a network connection here somewhere.

I used to be able to use Apple TV 2 with a stand-alone WiFi router and my iPad. However, 2 weeks ago, while trying to display video over this same set of tools, at a major trade show event, my Apple TV insisted that it be connected to the Internet to work. Nothing I tried solved this problem. Some update to the Apple TV broke this functionality. This is certainly not progress. As an A/V industry professional, this was 90% of my justification to purchase the ATV2.

Actually, we got it worked out. He is now set up with a D-Link Pocket Router and the latest version of AppleTV updated to the most recent firmware. The new software actually has a page during setup where if there is no internet connection found you are given the option to 'Continue Without Internet'.

Also, he is able to use his Verizon account to set up a Verizon Personal Hot Spot and connect the Apple TV to the internet using that connection.

Setup a Verizon hot spot with his iPhone or iPad, connect the ATV to the wifi network created by the hotspot.

FYI, You could do this type of setup with ATT but the feature is added monthly cost to your data plan and your data plan must be one of the new tiered plans. I have the grandfathered unlimited plans so it is not allowed on my data plan.

This post is old but I still have this issue. I have iPad 2 mini and iPhone 6+ and just bough ATV. I do not get the option of AirPlay where i should. I have set up a wireless router and all devices are connected to it (no internet). My question is "Should this setup work?". I don't have any internet in my home except 500mb daily use on my phone. I can hotspot but don't want to use data, I have music and videos already in my dives and I want to use mirroring. Any help or direction would be great. Thanks

How did you setup the ATV? Using the hotspot? And then you configured it to use your local network? Have you enabled AirPlay in the ATV settings? In your case, it might be easier to use peer-to-peer AirPlay. Turn on Bluetooth on your device, as well as WiFi, and ATV should appear in the AirPlay menu even without network, see How to use AirPlay on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.

I Got my issues sorted. I connected ATV to hotspot on my phone, reset all settings on ATV and then went through the initial setup again. I had noticed my ATV was not activated until that setup process was complete. No more than 10mb of data was used. I can now connect ATV and iPad to wireless router (no internet) and the AirPlay feature can be used. Thank you for responding!
